Several human studies have investigated the association between the external maternal environment and offspring neurodevelopment. These have identified ongoing physical and mental effects in later life.  This is called epigenetics.

External stimuli (outside stressors) often act synergistically, meaning they have a cumulative effect on epigenetics and subsequent health or behaviour. This can be mother’s emotional stress as well as environmental stressors, such as diet and lifestyle.

Additionally accumulating evidence suggests that maternal psychological and social stress during the pregnancy adversely affects the developing child segueing to a diverse range of poor physical and mental health outcomes.

For me, this explains so much about the health of kiddies and adults in my clinic space. However, nothing is set in stone, and this means we can make the necessary changes to embrace overall wellbeing. When your child sleeps well, your health also improves!
